Droplet shape control using microfluidics and designer biosurfactants

Many uses of emulsion droplets require precise control over droplet size and shape. Here we report a ‘shape-memorable’ micro-droplet formulation stabilized by polyethylene glycol (PEG)-modified protein -surfactant, the are stable against coalescence for months can maintain non-spherical shapes hours, depending on surface coverage PEGylated protein. Monodisperse with aspect ratios ranging from 1.0 to 3.4 were controllably synthesized flow-focusing microfluidic device. Mechanical properties interfacial network explored elucidate mechanism behind shape conservation phenomenon. Characterization film revealed that presence PEG layer at interfaces alters mechanical responses film, resulting in networks improved strength. Taking advantage prolonged stabilization droplets, demonstrate functionalization interface accessible biotins. The surface-active proteins also serve as an anchor integrating functional moieties, provides tailorable diverse biomimetic applications.
